The environmental impact of fast fashion: Why we need to switch to slow fashion

So how is Fast Fashion bad?

A study conducted by the Indian Institute of Fashion Technology sheds light on the impact of the clothing industry on consumer behaviour. The study reveals that compared to the year 2000, we are now buying 60% more clothing and footwear, with an annual expenditure of almost 68 billion dollars. These numbers are concerning as over 60% of the fabric used in clothing is non-biodegradable and is ultimately discarded in landfills, causing significant environmental harm.

The rise in consumer buying behavior can largely be attributed to the phenomenon of Fast Fashion. Fast Fashion is the production of low-priced, mass-produced clothing that follows the latest trends. This industry follows a rapid cycle of manufacturing and marketing apparel based on the latest trends, with fast fashion brands offering over eleven seasons, each requiring its own line of clothing. Consequently, consumers are continuously exposed to new styles and trends, leading to a sense of urgency to purchase.

The fast-paced production of apparel in the fast fashion industry generates a significant amount of fabric waste. Garments that are no longer in trend are often discarded without a second thought, and most of these materials are non-biodegradable. While this excess fabric waste is detrimental to the environment, the fast fashion system remains popular because it is cost-effective and provides consumers with new styles every season.

What does FabPoint do?

Fab Point aims to meet the challenges of sustainability in the fashion industry, with a new ethical approach that takes into account the needs of customers while promoting the fabric’s physical and emotional durability.

The approach is Slow Fashion, which differs significantly from Fast Fashion. Slow Fashion is based on the principle of prioritising quality and durability over speed, affordability, and trend. With this system, Fab Point emphasises the use of local and handcrafted apparel, placing a premium on high-quality products and fair labour conditions. Unlike Fast Fashion, which often neglects these considerations, with slow fashion our approach is environmentally and socially responsible.

The fashion industry is responsible for over 10% of global carbon emissions, making it one of the leading contributors to climate change. As part of the ethical fashion community, Fab Point recognises the need for accountability and aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the fashion industry. By promoting sustainable practices, such as the use of eco-friendly materials and reducing waste, we seek to reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry. We source pre-loved sarees or damaged fabric pieces directly from manufacturers. Our production process involves reusing and upcycling existing garments, which minimises fabric waste and reduces the use of new materials.

At the heart of our business, we also recognise the consumer purchase bias toward new trends. We serve that with our contemporary pieces that are one-of-a-kind and exclusive. The customer is gratified with the latest designs in addition to making ethical fashion choices.

At Fab Point, our aim is to reduce our carbon footprint with every piece of apparel we create. Our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility is at the core of our business practices.
