“Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful”, says John Maeda. Picking up the clue, this article is an attempt to introspect, retrospect, calculate and course-correct what have earned till date.
Globally, Sustainability has been the coolest buzzword amplified by an ocean of intellectual debates, discussions, power-packed fire-chats, and marketing jargons. But what does it really mean to common people. Let’s simplify it once for all-
Sustainability means fulfilling the needs of current generations without compromising the needs of future generations, while ensuring a balance between economic growth, environmental care and social well-being.
What’s Expected Out Of Us?
Owing to rise of dramatic global climate changes and living in a prolonged pandemic, the onus of sustainability lies not just on a selected few, it is a collective responsibility of all the residents of planet Earth, to practice conscious consumption and inch towards leading a sustainable lifestyle.
While talking about Sustainability, we often come across the words “upcycling” and “recycling”. You think you’re the only one confused between the 2 terms, don’t worry! We being an upcycling brand ourselves, we’ve had our share of debates about what’s what and have now concluded that both practices deserve due respect, recognition and clarity.
Recycling vs Upcycling, Simplified
Recycling is the act of turning products back into their raw materials that can be used to create new products, whereas Upcycling creatively repurposes old materials while maintaining some of their original characteristics.
We being the creative clan or the right brainers, have always been a bit biased to Upcycling and this article, therefore, is a prelude to the upside of upcycling.
Why Upcycle?
When upcycling, the original attributes are retained and the object is recognizable, which gives it a story — you can see what it has been and also what it has transformed into. In this sense, the upcycled object is a kind of tribute to the object it used to be.
At Fab Point, we upcycle pre-loved sarees into contemporary apparel, home and accessories. Poetically speaking, we upcycle nostalgia into personalized form, function and fashion.
Doing Our Bit
The Fab Point brand concept has sprouted out of the seed of sustainability ideology. Sustaining Circularity is a mountainous responsibility and requires undaunted passion and persistence. Our concept of Upcycling Nostalgia has fueled our love for fashionably Dressing Up. In this mission, we also take pride in supporting, celebrating and empowering a community of women artisans. We believe, we have humbly started co-creating a conscious culture and moved many small but significant steps into this overwhelming journey.
We at FABPOINT believe that a saree for a woman is beyond just a traditional outfit, it’s a 6 yard long story full of memorable occasions and moments. We are committed to create an ever-evolving ethical ecosystem for Saree Up-Cycling, reviving it’s timelessness by turning nostalgia into contemporary form, function and fashion personalized for today’s women.
With us, you can UpGrade, UpDesign, UpStyle, UpSell & UpCycle your pre-loved sarees, as you like it, in a creative and flexible manner.
Turning Struggles to Our Strengths
Upcycling comes with its own challenges, limitations and struggles. An upcycled product requires manual intervention at every stage for every piece, making it an extremely labor intensive task. When we work with sarees – they are old, frail and come with defects, however, their flaw-fullness gives them a unique identity. We work around these defects to transform them into a unique handcrafted piece. Which means that every piece has to be cut individually, unlike the mass manufacturing process of thousands of layers cut together.
Upcycling is in true sense, slow fashion, where one cannot increase capacities to the likes of fashion giants ever, so neither can we have a width of 500 new styles each day nor can we have a depth of per style quantum. But you know what, we believe that’s Our Super-Power: The Artisanal Human Touch Making Every Product One-Of-A-Kind.
